Lorraine Thomson
WEA [email protected] Project Coordinator, Inverness
The WEA [email protected] project aims to dismantle barriers caused by rural isolation, poverty and inequality, and to give women a voice in the home, at work and in the community. At our events, we provide information and support, offer opportunities to develop existing skills and learn new ones, and provide a safe environment in which women can grow in confidence, be empowered and connect with others. I am passionate about this project because it can, and does, change lives. The effects of these changes ripple out from individuals, through homes, work places and out to the wider community; what often starts as a small change can end up making a big difference.
Learner A first heard about the WEA [email protected] project through an advert in the local press. She was slightly apprehensive about attending her first event, in particular about meeting new people, but once there she found the atmosphere welcoming and stimulating. She subsequently signed up to the [email protected] email list and has attended several events in her local area.
“Information coming from a third party helps. Hearing different points of view, hearing something that gels and hoping it will stick. I’m learning a little bit more, making small changes. I’m finding confidence. I come away feeling more confident, thinking that it’s okay to be me.
The workshops allow time to focus. I’m not thinking about the business or housework. It’s time dedicated to learning without the distractions of the everyday.
There is no obvious alternative for me to have learning experiences like this anywhere else. Maybe there are some business type events in Inverness, but that would mean a 120 mile round trip.”
