Ross Murray
Education Co-ordinator, Grangemouth
I am responsible for the WEA's educational provision, including the running of three job clubs in the Falkirk area. The job clubs are a drop in service where unemployed people can access support with computing skills, literacy, job search, building CVs, covering letters and interview skills. Building confidence, self-esteem and putting anxious learners at ease is paramount. I offer accredited learning and support dyslexic learners. I have many years of experience in a variety of adult education settings and enjoy developing learning programmes to fit the needs of learners.
I love delivering learning that has a positive impact on people who have had barriers or been alienated from education. Also contributing to individuals achieving their goals and witnessing these ‘lightbulb moments’.
I work with a variety of learners with variety of challenges and barriers. Most work hard to change their situations. They are very supportive to each other and engage with our social practise, learner centred approach despite negative traditional education experiences. Many learners have moved into employment, other learning provision, volunteering, college and even published writing.
My hope is to keep going – adult learning that is learner centred and tailored to the needs of individuals works. It is a counter to mainstream education that, for some, can lead to alienation and cynicism. Learners can achieve, at any age, when they are valued, respected and exposed to learning that is meaningful to them.
