Mission statement
The Workers' Educational Association exists primarily to provide adults with access to the experience of organised learning which develops intellectual understanding, confidence and social or collective responsibility. It gives priority in the allocation of resources to encouraging those adults who have experienced barriers to learning as a result of economic circumstances, social isolation, limited confidence, low self esteem or lack of educational opportunity.

Aims and objectives
In accordance with the general aims of the WEA, the WEA in Scotland promotes adult education based on democratic principles in its organisation and practice, through the participation of its voluntary members. In pursuit of this aim, we have the following objectives:

  • Stimulating and satisfying the demand of adults for liberal education, through direct provision of courses and activities.
  • Providing in particular for the needs of working class adults, and those who are socially, economically or educationally disadvantaged.
  • Providing educational programmes for appropriate organisations concerned with the collective needs of adults in the community and in the workplace.
  • Furthering the general cause of education to ensure that all members of society have full opportunity for individual fulfilment through education.

Principles
The WEA does not discriminate in matters of gender, sexuality, race, age and disability. It is non-party in politics and non-sectarian in religion.
