We value your membership.
It is a statement of support for our work. It is a commitment to our vision and values and... if you are willing... you provide the WEA with practical help and encouragement through voluntary endeavour in so many different ways.
This is vital if we are to go from strength to strength.
Your participation allows us to respond effectively to learning needs.
You can be an active member of the Local Association in your area, perhaps being on the local committee or helping to run educational activities and promoting the work of the WEA.
In return, the WEA offers you a sense of fulfilment in what you do, a spirit of mutuality among like-minded friends and co-workers, and support and training to help you deepen your experience.
The WEA will keep you informed of developments within the organisation through its publications and activities.
Most importantly, the WEA values your views on how its educational activities can be further promoted and developed for the benefit of our students.
Who can join?
- Membership is open to all individuals and organisations who support the aims of the WEA.
- 65 trade union and other organisations support the WEA through affiliation, and over 1000 people are individual members.
Why join?
- Promote equality of access to learning throughout life.
- Support an approach to adult learning which underpins a healthy participative democracy and a fairer society.
Affiliation
The WEA welcomes affiliation from groups and organisations who share our aims and values.
It is essential that the WEA can show that there is a wide body of support for the right of adults to have access to learning throughout life.
In addition to recording their support for the WEA's work through affiliation, some of our affiliates have formed strong working partnerships with the WEA to our mutual benefit. For example:
- The WEA/UNISON Return to Learn partnerships extends the learning opportunities available to UNISON members
- Women's organisations, community groups and tenant associations have all shared in the development of community training initiatives.
Other educational organisations such as the Open University in Scotland enjoy exchanging ideas with us, occasional joint projects and making a common cause for adult education.
The WEA is always happy to explore partnership approaches to learning. Get in touch if you would like someone to speak to your organisation about the WEA's work.
