WEA Scotland

Educational Activity

Stimulating and providing education for adults in the community is central to the WEA Scotland's work. Much of this provision is developed through partnerships with a range of local and national organisations.

Courses are designed to meet the needs of individual groups and delivered around the WEA's key curriculum areas:

  • Return to study
  • Social studies
  • Pre-vocational trainin
  • Community arts
  • Liberal arts
  • Community training.

Though the subject matter varies, all WEA community learning programmes are committed to:

  • Supporting inclusivity
  • Valuing and making use of students' personal experience
  • Building students' confidence, skills, knowledge and understanding
  • Supporting progression to further learning.

Democratisation of culture

Since the 1970s, the WEA Scotland has contributed to a democratisation of culture in Scotland by involving people in grassroots creative writing and peoples' history. WEA Scotland groups have now produced over 100 anthologies of writing and history publications.
